A friend of mine read and recommended this book as a book for anyone. It covers a year in the life of an 8 year old Native American girl living with her family on Madeline Island in the early 1800's. ...more

I loved this book. I think if I read this as a teenager I would have loved it even more. This book is about the life of Omakayas, a Native American child living in the 1800s. Although fiction, events such as the small pox epidemic truly did take place. I enjoyed reading about how connected and reverential Omakayas' people were to the natural world around them — expressing gratitude to plants and animals was an everyday part of life — and within them — looking for guidance from dreams was common ...more

Are all middle grade books unreasonably heartbreaking and heartwarming?? Or just the ones I read?

Read this with kids because it's not Little House of Colonizers on the Prairie if you want, but mostly just read it because it's really good. ...more
