Gadzooks!! I do not have the time or patience for a protagonist who is so aggressively Not Like Other Girls, and despises and belittles all the other women around her.
I've been wanting to read this book for a long time now! it's so popular, and I've enjoyed everything else I've read by Raybourn. But No Thank You to Veronica Speedwell. I'm out. DNF after the first chapter.

Veronica tells the story herself and her tone is quite haughty and very self-assured .. she certainly appears to believe herself superior to almost everyone. Every second page she proclaims herself a cliche: feminist, free-thinker, scientist, pragmatist and yet one cannot help liking her. She champions curiosity but appears to have shown no curiosity in who

I haven't read much about this time period either fiction or nonfiction, so I'm afraid I accepted most of the background the author presented as truth or what life might have been during the late nineteenth Century. As are many books with female protagonists Veronica is strong and capable of holding her own against her male counterparts so easy to rout for. It was a nice change from many books now being published to not have several side plots with fantasy component.
