This is an extremely fast read or listen, and as others have commented, it felt more like a young adult book than historical fiction. I was more engaged with the book in the beginning, but over time it was a bit flat to me, especially when Ana is not speaking. I felt a disconnect at that point and wondered if I needed to go back and re listen to segments, but I didn't as I just moved forward while accepting that this was just the coping method employed by the protagonist. A quick read, which seems odd considering the subject matter. I was immediately hooked in the beginning. I was totally invested in the characters and their lives in war torn Yugoslavia. It felt abrupt when the book switched to current day in America. We hadn't quite gotten to know Ana well enough yet to understand her as an adult. It lost all its momentum and never really regained it's earlier feel. Too many characters just felt two dimensional.
