I'd read The Braindead Megaphone and had just peripherally heard the hype on Saunder's latest collection of short stories.
Many of the stories have a strange mix of the present mixed with a dystopian future. Credit card bills merge with brain controlled humans as lawn ornaments. Our futures (the present?) where drugs are used for penal enforcement or job performance.
Yet, Saunders pulls it off by infusing all the stories with a definite humanity, which even when bleak felt uplifting. ...more

Yea, all of the hype and plaudits are on the mark for this one. I went into Tenth of December a skeptic, but by the end I was wholly converted. The way that Saunders exposes characters' flaws and hypocrisies is so on point that readers won't be able to avoid wincing with recognition at how familiar these contradictions and foibles are in ourselves and society.
