This book requires one to pay attention to the characters because there are so many of them introduced. I had to write a list of the characters because I was slowed down by looking back to where the person had first been introduced - or not - because the names were really too many for me to keep track of. That is a criticism I've read in many other reviews. An adult Judy Blume book, this one tells this story of three generations of women living in Elizabeth, New Jersey in 1951-52. The story centers around the three air crashes that occurred within a short period of time, and how those crashes affected the lives of those who experienced them. The interwoven stories of the three women, especially the teenager Miri, demonstrate the myriad ways that people relate to each other as well as to their interior selves. I wasn't sure I was going to finish this one but in the end it was a decent read. I liked how Blume depicted the era and the events, but early on there were just too many jumps between characters and too many of those characters. To anyone reading this book, I would suggest spending a good chunk of time at the start of the book because otherwise it's easy to forget which character is which, and how they are connected. ...more
