Countess Elizabeth Bathory of Slovakia was convicted of 80 murders of young servant women in 1610. She believed that bathing in blood would keep her young looking. It was only when noble women were included in her torture sessions that King Matthias of Hungary stepped in and had her arrested (no one paid attention as long as she killed poor peasants). Linda Lafferty takes this legend and creates an entertaining historical fiction.
