[A Short Broken English Review]

A colourful cover of Vintage edition is the first thing that drew my attention to the book. While the plot seems risky as it could be boring or it could be something amazing.

There are many story besides Ludo, a main character. Each story so scattered and yet so connected. Agualusa’s writing is beautiful. However, I feel like the book is missing something. For example, how each character connected sometimes feel so forced and rush (which it could have been more beau [A Short Broken English Review]

There are many story besides Ludo, a main character. Each story so scattered and yet so connected. Agualusa’s writing is beautiful. However, I feel like the book is missing something. For example, how each character connected sometimes feel so forced and rush (which it could have been more beautiful), or when 'that situation' happened in a book I forgot for a minute that how they know each other because the writer has introduced him so fast and then the other man came and came.

I don't know if I should glad that the author reveals everything (like a pigeon!). I wish something left off as a mystery.

PS. wait... Ludo base on a real people! I thought forward is also a part of fiction!

หนังสือเอาเรื่องคนโปรตุเกสที่อาศัยในแองโกลาตัวคนเดียวนี้มาจากเรื่องจริง แต่เสริมและสร้างเรื่องเพิ่มเข้าไป ตอนแรกผู้เขียนตั้งใจเขียนเป็นบทหนังให้ผู้กำกับ Jorge António ก่อนโปรเจกต์จะล่มไปจนเขาเอามาเขียนเป็นหนังสือเล่มนี้

นึกว่าเรื่องจะออกมาเป็นสไตล์เล่ม Room ของ Emma Donoghue แต่ปรากฎผู้เขียนเล่าเรื่องของคนอื่นภายนอกด้วย เรื่องของลูโด้เลย fade ไปนิด และแต่ละคนก็เชื่อมโยงกันหมดไม่ทางใดก็ทางหนึ่ง แต่ด้วยการเล่าแต่ละบทแบบสั้นๆ และตัวละครอื่นก็ค่อนข้างเยอะ ทำให้เราค่อนข้าง lost และสับสนกับตัวละคร โดยเฉพาะตอนเกิดเหตุการณ์ในตอนท้ายเล่ม

ภาษาสวย เสียดายที่การเชื่อมโยงมันดูตั้งใจและไม่น่าเชื่อ และสำหรับบางอย่างเราว่ามันไม่จำเป็นที่จะต้องโยงให้มากขนาดนี้ ปล่อยเป็นปริศนาไว้บ้างก็ได้ (โดยเฉพาะเรื่องนกพิราบ) ...more

Africa. Hic sunt leones. And wounds and war and many other atrocities. Angola had it's share of all these and this novel is putting the recent history of the country in the spot light.

There is just a small thing which I usually do not like in such novels, written during or after authoritarian regimes: parables. But I get it is a problem with the censorship in such regimes. ...more
