A sweet little tale whose plot creeps up on you. Part 1 is about the 9-year-old girl nicknamed Kati (ka-ti means sweet coconut flesh in Thai) who lives with her grandparents by the water. There are evocative descriptions of food (it stirred my appetite!), flowers and the jars her grandmother keeps water and rice in. Nothing much happens here and I was lulled (almost bored) into thinking that this was going to be that sort of slice-of-life book. But then Part 2 reveals things hinted at in Part 1:
