If you have never read this author before then read "A Man Called Ove." Backman's first book is seamless. That being said, this is a good read. This story is more complex and has more depth. If I was the type of person to read a book a second time I believe I would find that the blend of fantasy and reality is even more rich than I could take in on the first read. It's so rare to find a book you really, really like. I've hit two in a row and it's hard not to draw parallels. Like The Curious Charms of Albert Pepper, this book delights and has humor, yet treats serious subjects. The story of My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You She's Sorry is told from the viewpoint of the precocious 8 year old Elsa. What an amazing story that just tugs at your heart! Elsa is a little girl whose grandmother means everything to her and who has helped her cope with the horrors of being harassed and bullied because she doesn't fit in. Her grandmother teaches her that is okay to be different, through the method of creating fantasy worlds to help her cope. (view spoiler)
