My thoughts:
• This was a 3.5 star read for me that I rounded up to 4 because of the historical information provided.
• I was a little confused at the beginning by the characters we are quickly introduced to and their relation and reactions to each other but reading a little further cleared up my confusion.
• For me the most fascinating aspect of the book was information regarding the Bosnian War of which I knew very little before reading this book. I also like the format of how the information was ...more

I like mystery novels that are tight and focused on solving the mystery. This book felt very rambling, it was bloated with so much extra information that was not related to the central mystery. Rachel's abusive father, her fraught relationship with her parents (soooo fraught that she actually still lives with her parents), her missing brother, Esa's childhood friend, their falling out, Esa's former floozy partner, the history of Moorish Spain (I learned that Al-Andalus is the Moorish name for Sp

This was on a list of books with a Muslim lead character or author. I joined a Muslim networking group to become a better ally and so I followed this book theme for Ramadan. I expected a typical crime series where I would learn about Muslim customs but came out much more educated since it was about the Bosnia war crimes. So harrowing and I even read the sources of the quotes from the War Tribunal.
