Woodson certainly has a way with words. Even though her verse in this memoir is simple, she captures what it was like to grow up as a young Black girl in the South during the Civil Rights Movement in an incredibly insightful way. I love the rhythm and reflection she creates in her writing; I am so lulled by her verse. Woodson intensely focuses on her family members and her growing relationships with them.
