This is a beautiful story set in England during WWII. The librarian at my school chose this novel as a teacher read-aloud for my 4th graders. I tend to be on the protective side and was concerned that it might be too much for them emotionally, but it was a perfect read-aloud. They LOVED it. It shows (and models) so much empathy and love and is very powerful. It was also fascinating that the WW2 war events and issues didn't depress them. They know a good story!

This is a beautiful and inspiring story about a young girl, Ada, who grew up in London in the 1930s. Her mother was embarrassed by her daughter’s club foot and never let her leave the house. Her younger brother Jamie was going to be evacuated to the countryside during WWII. Ada and Jamie experience freedom and love for the first time by their caretaker. There is also the backdrop of the war and other sun plots, but Ada’s determination and the life she enjoys in the country are inspiring. 5 stars

I enjoyed this book from beginning to end. It takes place during WWII and you all know how much I love my WWII stories. The two main characters have a rocky relationship that evolves throughout the story. Ada, who is 10, and her guardian, Susan spend a lot of time in the book learning to trust each other.
