I seem to choose books and then find they have a supernatural aspect to them. This is the third recently. But the main reason I rated this so highly was the elephants. According to the book they are one of the most intelligent animals and have a huge capacity for memory and compassion. The real stories about how they behave in herds with all sorts of life and death situations are beautiful and touching. I gave it three stars mostly because of the killer twist at the end of the story, otherwise the story wasn't that engaging. There was a lot of scientific research about elephants that made the story drag to no end. I loved Jenna and Serenity, but the other characters including Alice were mostly despicable and I didn't care much for them. In a nutshell, if you don't LOVE elephants, don't get this book. ...more

This was my first Jodi Picoult novel and I am somewhat torn by my review. The plot and characters are ridiculous, stereotypical, and completely unbelievable. (Even though this *sort* of makes sense by the end?). Yet the elephant information was fascinating and heartbreaking and I could not put the book down.
