I missed this book when I had finished it. I knew nothing of the woman about who it is written (fictional tale of a real person,Beryl Markham, including real events- always in interesting genre), so started it without any preconceived ideas. The early part of the book: young girl abandoned by her mother, living in colonial Africa and growing up with horses, very friendly with a local tribe, becoming strong and independent- ticks my boxes. This is excellent in audio format. At first, I was not so enamored by Beryl and her choices, but over time, I came to appreciate them and also to cheer her on for standing up for herself and her dreams. The relationship with her mom and in-laws was so sad, but she was so strong. I would recommend.
I just loved this book - I loved the story, the main character Beryl, the setting - Kenya in the early 1900s, the characters of Denis and Karen Blixen, the writing - each chapter seemed to end with some sort of food for thought, effortless reading and interesting from start to finish.
