Geraldine Brooks is a truly excellent writer of Historical Fiction. By that, I mean she really accomplishes the task of bringing you into that time and place and making those historical figures seem so real and relatable.
In that respect, she had a real challenge in front of her with this novel. Set in and around 1000 BC, The Secret Chord is the story of King David, as told to us by Nathan The Prophet. Most readers will be familiar with some of David’s story, even if they haven’t read the bible. ...more

I had the hardest time getting into this at first, but chapter by chapter it grew on me until I was outright enthralled for the last half.
The story of the life of King David as told by his prophet Nathan. Geraldine Brooks includes all the details from the biblical account of David's life but then expands on them. The other people involved in David's life are much more fleshed out than they are in the Bible. I especially appreciated the personality the author gave to Bathsheba. This book has taken me a while to finish, which is unexpected for a work from this author. There were times when I was engrossed, but mostly this story of David's life, told through the eyes of the prophet Natan, didn't catch my imagination and at times was hard to pick up and carry on. I can see that there must have been a lot of research behind the scenes to put a work like this together, but somehow it didn't quite gel for me.
