This was a 3.5 read for me.

Once again Ron Rash has provided a riveting read that pulls the reader into the story with poetic language and strong characterization with an unsettling plot set in contemporary town in the Appalachian region of North Carolina. While the action takes place over a couple of days before the local sheriff retires, the flashbacks, the dialogue and landscape makes the reader feel like they know this time and place. I enjoyed the novel, but the ending left me feeling flat. The sheriff's last act felt slightly out of character for me and I realize the attempts that were made leading up to the conclusion to make me accept what he did, but it ended up feeling like a magic trick where you can totally see how the magician did it. I think that is about all I can say without spoilers, but Rash does write great prose. ...more
