This was a 3.5 read for me.
Once again Ron Rash has provided a riveting read that pulls the reader into the story with poetic language and strong characterization with an unsettling plot set in contemporary town in the Appalachian region of North Carolina. I enjoyed the novel, but the ending left me feeling flat. The sheriff's last act felt slightly out of character for me and I realize the attempts that were made leading up to the conclusion to make me accept what he did, but it ended up feeling like a magic trick where you can totally see how the magician did it. I think that is about all I can say without spoilers, but Rash does write great prose.
