Full disclosure: I liked, never loved, To Kill a Mockingbird. I loved this story. The grown up Scout was just wonderfully exactly who you would hope she would be, Atticus is far more complex than the early reviewers would have you believe, there was enough new material and character development that I'm only sad we likely won't be going back to Maycomb.

To Kill a Mockingbird is my absolute favorite book of all time, and I thought I wouldn't like Go Set a Watchman, but I did. GSaW is not at all like TkaM. TkaM's narrative is as smooth as silk, whereas GSaW's narrative has a restless, jumpy feel to it.

Since this book was published earlier this week there have been thousands of reviews written. I have deliberately avoided reading any of them so as not to affect my own judgement of this book but short of locking myself in a darkened room without any form of communication from the outside world it has been impossible not to have got the gist of the fact that the vast majority of these reviews have been negative.

So this was an interesting book.
I do not think it was Harper Lee's intention to ever publish it and I think she was horribly taken advantage of in her age and mental decline. But since it is out there anyway, I did read it. (For free, from the library because I don't want anyone profiting off of her exploitation).
One should only read this if they are really serious about literature and the process of writing. This is clearly NOT a sequel to To Kill A Mockingbird, but a very rough draft. It was ...more
