It was interesting to read this straight after To Kill a Mockingbird. Much of this book is an early draft of material which was later reworked in her masterpiece, and there are occasional flashes of the brilliance that was to come. But there's no getting away from the facts that 'Watchman' doesn't hang together as a novel, and the second half of the book is increasingly weak and muddled. This book is at its best in the little details of Maycomb life, but falls apart over the big themes and in pa

Having held Atticus Finch on a pedestal for over 30 years, I wasn't sure I wanted to read this when it was published. However having recently re-read Mockingbird I felt I was ready!
It was a different experience from Mockingbird with a lot of political stuff I didn't entirely understand. I enjoyed the vignettes from Scout's teenage years. About 2/3 of the way through I couldn't decide if I liked it or not and then the last chapter almost broke my heart. ...more

2.5 stars.
Despite the controversy over this book, I am glad that I read it. If you are expecting the quality of To Kill a Mockingbird, however, you will be as disappointed as I was. The book is full of long sections of political talks and explanations. It is not written all that well. It leaves little to the imagination. This book gave me lots of things to think about!
This book gave me lots of things to think about!

Pointless. You can tell that this was a rejected draft. Full of long drawn out discussions, opinions and personal angst. Only one worthy quote: prejudice, a dirty word and faith, a clean one, have something in common; they both begin where reason ends, or something similar. I am not even going to bother looking it up. Mercifully the book was short. Another dead giveaway that it was most probably the drivel culled out of the more famous book.
