I like all of Elizabeth Berg's stuff. She has a way of describing simple things that make them glimmer somehow. The story is told from a 13 year-old girl's point of view, which she does a terrific job of, and takes place during the civil rights movement. Her mom contracts polio just before her birth, leaving her paralyzed, and her husband leaves her when he finds out she'll always be a quadriplegic.
