Very little fiction I read features the truly elderly as protagonists, so when I heard about a crime novel featuring an octogenarian ex-cop, I had to pick it up. Buck Schatz is a retired Memphis homicide detective who fits squarely into the plain-spoken cranky old coot archetype. He's lived long enough to have been a POW in WWII, married sixty years, outlive his son, and generally see the world he knows disappear. Great mystery featuring an elderly protagonist who is remarkably resiliant and cognisant of his surroundings. Would that I could be the same at age 87. Also full of wry humor.

Typical cop/murder/mystery story, made interesting by the thoughts, musings, and dialogue of the lead character, Buck Schatz, 87 year old retired police detective.
