The female characters in this book are all unique and interesting, but it is the old river pirate, Jacques, that I enjoyed more than almost any other character in a contemprary novel. I will remember him for years to come. What a great read.

Interesting setting and time, but since it covers several generations with overlapping characters it is better read in long segments .
