A heart wrenching but brilliant first novel set in the Piney Woods of East Texas. The writing is unbelievably evocative and lyrical. Masterfully told, the story is horrific and haunting; it will rip the heart out of your chest and have your soul in your throat. But it's a story that needs to be told and a story that needs to be remembered. As the main character says in the novel, "if you can bear to have lived it, I can at least bear to listen". And so we must.
