This short story is best to be enjoyed aloud with a child. The words and their rhythm are what make this tale especially magical and fun to read. Although The 13 Clocks is completely unique, it reminds me of The Princess Bride mixed with a bit of the Jabberwocky.

The 13 Clocks is a fun fairy tale. It reminds me of The Princess Bride (perhaps PB was modeled after 13 Clocks?) A prince arrives at the castle of a mean, mean Duke, incognito, to find a way to win the hand of the Princess. The Duke sees through his disguise (via his secret spies) and sends the prince off, as he has many other princes in the past, on an impossible mission. But the prince has a helper, the Golux, who is helpful, though he often makes things up.

Creative, but I read it only because it was on several lists. I don't think I would have picked it up without recommendations to do so.

James Thurber is the language king. Every story I read by him I am so awed by the words in his books. This is a great story to read to your child, it is so creative and imaginative. Adults will not be disappointed either. Finding stories that instill love, hope, fun and a really good villian make me love reading more and more. Thank You James Thurber!
