I have vivid memories of reading this on a family trip to Ireland when it came out, I must have been around eleven or so. Rereading it forty years later, I'm somewhat amazed at how much of the story I remembered. Firmly situated as it is in the middle of England (Leicester, to be precise) in 1980-81, it's hard to imagine how the book would land with a kid reading it today. My highschool bff and I read this book out loud to each other. I think I have read it once a year ever since. It is the opposite of Catcher in the Rye.
