I'd wanted to read this for years. Glad I finally did. Incredible. Clarke built a complete magical history for England, complete with an elaborate bibliography full of made-up books, each listed with publisher's information and all the reference information needed to research the book...if it actually existed. The book was incredible, but the work that went into backing up the story with an entire made-up history is even more amazing.

The story of two magicians who are destined to bring magic back to England. The first third of this book really drags. The next third picks up in places with Strange finally comign into the story but still pretty slow. The last third was interesting and the plot did get wrapped up but it took way too long to get to that point.

This one took me about three weeks to get through (which is an unusually long time for me), but it's worth sticking with it. Vivid and rich, the perfect sort of sprawling saga for a series of winter nights.
