The book switches between 1971 and 2007. In 1971 eleven year old Dylan Raines is convicted of murdering his whole family except his brother Rich with an axe. Dylan accepts that he committed the crime even though he doesn't remember doing so. He is dubbed the Butcher Boy and is sent to juvenile detention.
