It's hard to write about this sixty-year-old book without spoiling the big twist that happens about 50-60 pages in. Those first 50-60 pages patiently describe a young doctor's road trip from Los Angeles to Phoenix, where his family is gathering for a wedding. Along the way he picks up a teenage hitchhiker who's kind of pushy and annoying, and whose story for travelling seems a little off. After dropping her off at the bus station with some cash, he's shocked when she turns up at his hotel later

I found the tone of this story quite menacing, very much the mood of an old movie like Cape Fear or a Hitchcock.
