I adored this heartwarming novel about an 83 year old woman who decides she needs to see the ocean and leaves a note for her husband Otto and starts walking East. Along the way she meets a coyote and names him James. I love books about that contain journeys and this one is no exception. The book juxtaposed a physical journey with a journey of the heart and the journey one makes throughout a long lived life. It also contains some magical realism sprinkled through out the story. Highly recommend.

Etta is 83 and has decided to walk east from Saskatchewan, Canada to the ocean. She leaves her husband Otto behind and their neighbor Russell who has loved Etta for a long time. James is where the magical realism part comes into the book. The book switches between mainly Etta and Otto in the present and their past with Otto growing up with a large family, Etta becoming his school teacher and Otto eventually going to war. An 82 year old woman who is losing her memory sets out on a walk to the ocean, 2008 miles away, because she's never seen it. Her husband stays home writing her letters that he doesn't send and makes paper mache figures. Set in Gopherlands,, Saskatchewan. Bizarre.
