I loved Butler's Bloodchild and Kindred, and started this book with great excitement. Sadly, I just couldn't get into it. It seems to be of its time (early 1990s, and actually felt more like the 1980s) and of a mode that seems out-dated to me: an apocalyptic vision of feral people murdering each other, swarms of people trekking northwards along California's highways and a small band of found family struggling for survival. Now that I have found out when this book was written, I’ll be a bit gentler with my comments. There’s a lot of dystopian fiction out there now, and it’s one of my genres, so this has a lot of echoes in other books- But in fact it may have been first with many of the ideas. I found that I had a lot of sympathy with the protagonist and her story, but became increasingly annoyed with the Earthseed comments and their quasi-religious and sometimes greeting-card messages.
