What a wonderful story! This has been sitting on my shelf for a long time waiting to be read, and now I wish I had read it sooner. It is the first in a trilogy of historical fiction, and is set in several states, with the main part of the story taking place in northern Florida and Georgia. This book was first published in 1971. The author, Eugenia Price, based the novel on real people who lived 1790s through the early 1800s. She invented their thoughts and feelings -- this is a novel, not a biography. The characters were believing Christians and prayed and attended church. Eugenia Price obviously admires the main characters in the novel, but she has a problem: they owned slaves. How do you make slaveholders into good, noble, Christian people?
