Not a perfect book, but a complex, engaging story. After the first 100 pages or so of this over 600-page novel, I lost sleep rushing to finish it. A tale of the interwoven lives of two men in 1930s Louisiana - Willie Stark (Southern white poor) and Jack Burden (Southern white rich). Jack Burden narrates the story. Be warned that this book was published in 1946 and is about the 1930s in the U.S. Southern state of Louisiana, so the language and portrayal of African Americans is of this period.

This classic tale of political corruption in the 1930's and 40's in the South was based on the real-life politician, Huey "Kingfish" Long. In our time of continued political corruption, this book could read as a cautionary tale, although those who need to be aware of their actions are not the type to read this and heed the message within, sadly.
