What Members Thought
I enjoyed this book a lot; however it is definitely not for everyone. It follows the lives of one farming family from Iowa over many years. The book begins in 1920 and each chapter occurs in in the subsequent year. The chapters are not lengthy so you don't get an entire look at what happens to each character but through the years it is easy to follow - (in may case because I kept referring back to the genealogy chart in the front! A bit tedious in parts as this saga describes the life of a farm family in Iowa from 1920 through the early 1950's. Americana at its best and an interesting period for a rural family.

This started out sloooow, and kind of boring -- I was really alarmed when Smiley started switching to babies' perspectives in the narration -- but it started to get rather compelling in the middle.
