Mathew Spain is a police lieutenant in a Los Angeles that is very different than the one we know! Matt was injured in WW II, and is trying to solve the mysterious death of the spoiled son of a local millionaire. Phil Arlens body is pulled from the Brea tar pit. Matt meets Nathan Doyle here, who is with his fellow journalists. The story is great in that the reader isn't told "this is LA, the year is blah blah, Nathan is this and this is how things are. Nathan...absolutely breaking my heart!

In Lanyon style, the setting for this book is absolutely tangible...all of your senses are fully engaged with the finesse of writing. Noir is captured and you are transported into the era. The mystery is straightforward, but still keeps you reading.

The characters...oh Nathan. He is a broken man that so fully NEEDS. And that NEED fully breaks your heart throughout the story. Enter Matt, you just want him to be a standup guy.
