I read this back when I was a kid. I decided it was time to read it again. I am glad I did, because Cynthia Voigt is a gifted author.
Dicey Tillerman's mother parks the car in a mall parking lot in Connecticut, tells her other three children to mind Dicey, gets out of the and walks away. Dicey only knows they were headed to Bridgeport to visit an aunt. So, after waiting a day for their mother to return, the children head off to Bridgeport, hoping they will find their mother there.

The four Tillerman children are abandoned by their mother in a parking lot, and hitchhike their way across the country in search of their relatives.
