Glory Hemphill is 11, almost 12, living in Mississippi in 1964. Glory is upset that her sister doesn't want to spend time with her any more and the community pool may be closing just before her birthday. Glory befriends Laura who is in town with her mother who is running a free clinic for African Americans. Glory slowly becomes aware of the burgeoning civil rights movement happening around her.
