Dark Lies the Island is a wonderfully eclectic collection of 13 short stories, mostly set in Ireland and focused on a spectrum of lives, including two elderly ladies whose appearance belies the fact that they have a rather sinister "occupation;" middle-aged men on a breezy ale club outing that causes them to pull up short and consider the state of their lives; a young woman tempted to continue cutting herself; and a drunken town doctor who befriends a group of hippy travelers.
