This is a powerful book written by a meticulous author. The subject is scary and heart wrenching and told from the point of view of Emily Shepard. She starts out as 16 years old, the only child of parents who work at a nuclear plant in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom. Her father, Bill Shepard, is the chief administrator of the plant and her mother, Mira, also works there as a communications specialist. What I enjoyed most about this book were the accurate descriptions of various places in Burlington, Vermont, and what it might be like for a homeless teen trying to survive there. It helped me to see a familiar location from a very different perspective.
What seemed to be missing was the tension between opposing viewpoints that defined many of Bohjalian's earlier books (Midwives, Law of Similars, Water Witches). ...more
