Audiobook. Not sure why I didn’t like this as much as the ones before. Maybe because I knew it was the last one with this narrator, so it was slightly bittersweet? He did make one noticeable stumble, which is remarkable given he reads them all cold, saying Jean-Guy in the English fashion. Or because Clara’s development was unexpected? I didn’t like how she spoke to Armand, how she sort of presumed, how she didn’t listen, how she kind of took and took and hardly gave. Also the ending surprised me

I should not read books back to back by the same author because of the inevitable comparisons - I always like one better. I loved book 11 - The Nature of the beast - but this one was just so so. I think my problem was with Peter - he was such a jerk in the book about Clara's success in the one woman show, that I had a hard time being sympathetic. Still I liked the road trip that the four friends took and the descriptions of the towns and scenery. I really should be reading these books in order.

Louise Penny's novels are thoughtful and very insightful into human nature. In this one, Gamache, Beauvoir, Clara, and Myrna join forces to try to find Clara's missing husband Peter. They have a long, difficult journey, and make many wrong assumptions along the way, but when the novel ends, the reader is stunned by a very unexpected ending.
