Boxers & Saints are companion graphic novels that recount two sides of the Boxer Rebellion in 1890s China. Boxers tells how Chinese villagers took up arms against foreign Catholic missionaries and Chinese converts to Catholicism. While based on historical events, the rebels in Boxers channel traditional gods and operatic heroes which lends an element of fantasy to the novel and serves to show the passion of the villagers who sought to preserve China's cultural tradtions. This just didn't work for me. I can see that Yang wanted to write something "important" and he gave it a good go, and it worked for a lot of other people. But for me ... nope. I didn't know much about the Boxer Rebellion before I started reading this (except that it was an uprising in China), and I still don't know much about the Boxer rebellion. I really doubt it was a bunch of deluded boys inspired by broken statuary and a few country punks stealing food, and somehow powered by ancient gods. T

Boxers is a graphic novel that tells about the Boxer Rebellion in China. I learned a bit about history, but I don't think the book will really stick with me.
