Well-written account of the scientists and support personnel that choose to live in this cold, barren place. Walker explains the personalities and the scientists' research. She summarizes a geologic and human history (including a fair amount on early explorers and subsequent settlement). The author excels at conveying the strange beauty of the place and attempts to explain what scientists' ice cores tell us about our overall climate & the planet's future. ...more
