3,5 stars!!

This is a good example of a clever thriller, with enough twists and turns and intriguing characters, plus a great reliable narrator. Perhaps I was just too mad to give it more stars because I felt cheated LOL

As most Japanese thrillers (including Keigo Higashino's books), the mystery is a bit too much, too complicated. But instead of playing with whodunit, here Higashino played with "why did he do it"?

It's very innovative and out of the box, and definitely I'll read the rest of the ser

This was a 3.5 read for me.

The last book I read also had to do with authors and whether or not they wrote books they claimed they had. Funny when that happens. From The Valley of Unknowing to this, from East Germany to Japan, such different stories but what a coincidence.

I love that the story has more to do with why a thing happens than who did it. This is the second book of Higashino's that I've listened to and I like that: it's a whydunit not a whodunit.

Writer Kunihiko Hidaka is found strangled to death by his friend Osamu Nonoguchi and by his wife. Detective Kyochiro Kaga is the main detective on the case. The murderer is quickly discovered and most of the book is spent uncovering the murderers motive. There are a lot of twists in the story but I still found the story slow in parts. It was interesting reading a mystery from a different culture and I would like to read more from this author.

This is one that is a good puzzle and should keep you guessing until the end. It has that typically Japanese sense of gloom about it where suffering is deemed a virtue.

This is such an odd murder mystery! Within the first 20% of the book, a man is murdered, the police investigate, find a suspect, and the suspect confesses. What, then is the rest of the book??? The motive. What really happened. No, really THIS time it's the truth. No, wait, THIS time is the truth. Or is it? Better keep reading. ...more

Interesting way to unfold the story. Other than the names, the setting doesn't feel particularly Japanese in this one. It seems like something that would easily get made into a movie set in another country. ...more
