DNF @175 pages. I tried really hard to read this book because it was sent to me in my Page 1 Books subscription. I enjoyed the various character voices in the beginning, but pretty much nothing is happening, there's too much violence, it's way too involved and experimental, and all the narrators & points of view (except 1) are men. And the amount of political information being thrown at me is overwhelming. This just isn't a book I'm enjoying overall and don't want to slog through 500 more pages ...more

I recognize this book is a masterpiece, but I never fully bonded with it. I learned a ton about Jamaica’s history, and some crucial context about Bob Marley, and I think James created an incredible cast of characters. But I only liked a handful of them, no more, and I was actively turned off or disinterested by others.
