Normally when a piece of historical fiction falls flat for me, it's because of an excess of detail and wearing the research a bit too heavily. This has the opposite problem - there's not enough historical meat on the bones to round out the story of Edward and Pete's affair. While I understand that part of Leavitt's intent was to draw out the transient nature of life in 1940 Lisbon, I feel like the throwaway ending he gives Pete deserved more life than a couple of thinly sketched chapters at the
