I totally love this book and wish Ove was my neighbor. Ove is a man living on his own after his wife's death. He comes off rather curmudgeonly at the beginning of the book but the gruff exterior is hiding a man who was absolutely devoted to his wife and to working hard and doing the right thing. This book had me alternately crying my eyes out and laughing heartily. Along with Ove I love his neighbors Parvaneh, her kids, Jimmy, Anita and Rune and the mangy cat who I would totally adopt. Is the curmudgeon narrative a genre? Or is that just a curmudgeonly thing to write.

We are all connected is the feeling I had most strongly after and while reading this book. This book so reminded me of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry...a best seller so I keep expecting the mostly dull story line to explode into brilliant fireworks, but at the end I learn it really is just a mostly banal story about an old white guy. I did like the life/death talk.

I know I am supposed to love this book - international best seller and all that - but I found Ove tough to like and the story generally sad. It does not paint a nice picture of old age and the fact that he is acting this way at age 59 is even more depressing. For the first half of the book I thought he was 80. There were a few enjoyable moments like when when he gets the best of the men in black suits and how he causes the neighbors to band together. My favorite scenes all had to do with the cat ...more

Read the last 160 pages in one go, the last thirty or so holding back and shedding the odd tear. Amazing that a novel initially about grief, loneliness and attempted suicides would turn out to be so joyous and life affirming. Would recommend this book to anyone who needs cheering up ,even though it will make you cry. I also agree about Renaults
