In Sweet Destiny by Rochelle Alers, Dr. Mia Eaton has left city life behind and moved to a rural West Virginia town, Jonesburg, to become its new doctor. While her cousins and friends are getting married, Mia’s plans do not include marriage or serious relationship in the near future as she is determined to make a difference in Appalachia. The town’s sheriff, Kenyon Chandler, is a retired pilot who came home to be closer to his family. The town’s sheriff, Kenyon Chandler, is a retired pilot who came home to be closer to his family. The two are connected by their cousins’ marriage, and first impressions are not favorable as Kenyon thinks Mia is a snob that will not last six months in the rural community, and Mia thinks Kenyon is so arrogant.

In the sixth book in the Eaton series, the characters are richly drawn, as is the setting, Both Mia and Kenyon are strong independent characters, yet stubborn in love and romance matters, each for their own reasons. Both Mia and Kenyon will have to learn to trust what they are learning about each other, and not give in to unfounded perceptions. While the sexual tension is present between Mia and Kenyon, and the love scenes are steamy, they both take their time to get to know each. The well-paced action makes their journey of falling in love romantic, and to me is one of the strengths of the story. The Eaton series emphasizes strong family values and relationships which shape the characters, and many of the secondary characters will feel like family to the reader.

As in prior books in the series, Rochelle Alers intertwines information on an issue into the storyline, and in Sweet Destiny, we learn about the challenges facing medical services in the rural area of Appalachia. When reading about the setting of the story, I felt the beauty and the love of the environment, and the pull for survival that often meant sacrifices of lives and the environment.

With warmth, humor, angst and relatable scenarios, the author pulls the reader in and wraps a tale of love, friendship and heartfelt desires with results that speak to most of us. I recommend this book to romance readers and fans of the Eaton series. You will not be disappointed.
