I really enjoyed Keegan's Booker nominated "Small Things Like These." It was about as close to perfect as I can imagine a novella to be. Her earlier short story collection "Antarctica" contains a lot of the same precision in writing, but lacks the heart of her later work. The title story (which is practically a horror story) struck me as the best and most developed of the lot, but you pretty much know how it was going to end two or three pages in ("Ballad of Lucy Jordan"). Chilling, unsettling stories about families, relationships, betrayal, regret, and crime. I had to take a break after the first one, the titular Antarctica, because though it was brilliant and carried out perfectly, I wasn’t prepared for the ending to go the way it did. I'm glad I came back to it, this time a knowing what to expect.
