The value in this book is for the inspiration much more so than the specific suggestions, which I think Rubin herself would admit. I've been thinking a lot lately about happiness and how to foster it in my own life, mostly by being more aware of happiness as I'm feeling it. It's going well, and spending time reading about how other people make themselves happy is a useful reminder to give happiness the time and attention it deserves.

Through Gretchen's year-long process, she showcases her learning, which is aligned with the common theme that we see across religions, philosophies, as well as catastrophic memoirs like When All Balls Drop and Brain on Fire. This theme is the wise advice to live fully and thankfully in the present.

I can attest that there is something to be said about mindfulness and happiness. I believe it is our greatest power, to shift our perspective to happiness.

Vacation book #4. I was already half-way through this book when she first used the word “queer” in the old-fashioned way. Cmon Gretchen. Maybe I’m doing the whole negativity thing, but this was published in 2009. And you live in New York. I’m sure there are people in that situation who just don’t know better, but I don’t particularly want to learn life lessons from them. Otherwise there was some cute stuff.
