To my surprise, I REALLY enjoyed this. I shouldn't be surprised, I love everything Cherie Priest writes, but steampunk has just never seemed that interesting to me.
The setting is dark and gritty, an alternate Seattle in 1863, you can almost feel the dirt on your skin as you read. The setting: an accident has released a noxious gas from underground. Said noxious gas bleaches your hair, etches glass windows, burns skin, and - when breathed - kills you and then turns you into a zombie. Ew. Meanwhil ...more

There is something about Cherie Priest's writing that always draws me in, no matter what the genre. Steampunk is something that I want to like, but never actual enjoy as much as I feel I should have, but if it were all written like Boneshaker, I would have nearly so many complex feelings towards it.

The plot's a pretty linear affair (albeit one any parent can relate to), but Priest does a nice job in communicating her vision of her alternate world in a decidedly unvisual medium. Leaves an interesting setup for part 2 of the series, which appears to offer a little more meat for a storyline.
