I enjoyed reading the coming-of-age story of Elena and Lila. I loved the details of growing up in an impoverished, violent part of Naples. Although the story was a delight to read, I wasn't blown away by the prose and the plot as I had expected. Ferente's stories are getting glowing reviews these days, so somehow I expected magic. I didn't get that.

Because I had read the second book first in this series first, I knew all the characters and what would happen to them in the next stage of their lives. This book takes Elena and Lina from 10 years old to 16 - so even thought this was well written it was still about 2 teenaged girls. Glad I read it, but the second book held my interest much more. Still I loved all the discussion about education - how both girls were so hungry to learn things in different ways and by different means. I definintel
