Dupa indelungi deliberari, cred ca i-as da 3.5 stele.

Despite rapturous praise from many friends whose taste I respect, I'd avoided Ferrante's "Neopoltian Quartert" on the grounds that it just didn't sound like my kind of book. However, when my longstanding book club selected it, I had no qualms finally picking it up since there've been plenty of other times we picked books I had no interest in, only to be pleasantly surprised.
Unfortunately, this was not one of those times. Other than a very few brief scenes here and there, I found basically nothin ...more

I’ve been waiting to read this because of the amazing reviews. I started it twice before on audio and just couldn’t get into it. I recently started it again feeling this was my last shot.
So I stuck with it and realized that it’s a phenomenally written post WWII stories set in Italy. It might be better read on Kindle or holding a book in hand. Sampai akhir tahun lalu, saya belum pernah mendengar nama Elena Ferrante.

This felt like the backstory to The Goddather. Am I sorry that I read it? No. Do I want to know what happens next? Yes, but maybe not enough to keep reading the next book. 😕

At first, this book is pretty slow- i was wondering what made it such a favorite all over the world. But along the way, the life of Lena and Lila in poor neighborhood in Naples around the 50s started to capture my heart. I care about them, I can connect with them and I feel them. The story flew quickly til the end and now I want to read the second book badly! I want to know all about the juicy life, gossips, envy, jealousy, love, and self discovery that both characters go through in the next sta

I heard so much about how great this series is so I finally decided to read it. At first I wasn't sure what all the fuss was about but then I got to the "Adolescence" section and I got it completely. It captures a time and a place and it very much captures what it feels like to be insecure and growing up and not sure of who you are and what you want. I can't wait to read the rest!

Chapter 1 - framing device: oh, my friend has disappeared, I wonder why, we're in our 60s now, but you know what, I'm not really too surprised because she was like that when were were like, ten.
Chapter 2 - here we are as ten-year-olds ...
oh god, I don't think I will last through this origin story of a cult leader.
After multiple times where I caught myself checking how much is left, feeling the dread of reading the remaining 51 chapters, despite being around halfway through, I feel immense reli ...more

This book was just okay for me - I didn't hate it, and I didn't love it. It didn't really hold my attention either way and I would have to back up the audiobook because I found my mind wandering. I wonder how much of that is due to the narrator - she did a fine job, but didn't have much excitement/inflection in her voice and she kept changing the pronunciation of Lila's name (sometimes LIE-la, sometimes LEE-la). I won't likely continue with the series.
